We claim that these theories manifest in one of three forms: prospective, prophecy, and science-fiction. We then ask if such theories tend to close down or rather open up the space of possible futures. While some observers have argued that they reduce the trajectories of human development to a unique catastrophic one, we will show that they actually give rise to a number of alternative imaginaries for the post-capitalist and post-oil era. %G English %2 https://hal.science/hal-03920263/document %2 https://hal.science/hal-03920263/file/Theories%20of%20Global%20Collapse.%20Closing%20Down%20or%20Opening%20Up%20the%20Futures.pdf %L hal-03920263 %U https://hal.science/hal-03920263 %~ SHS %~ AGROPARISTECH %~ PRES_CLERMONT %~ CNRS %~ UNIV-VALENCIENNES %~ AO-SOCIOLOGIE %~ SOCIOLOGIE %~ HIPHISCITECH %~ ACL-SHS %~ TERRITOIRES %~ AGREENIUM %~ INSA-GROUPE %~ CIS %~ UNIV-LYON %~ INRAE %~ LAMIH %~ TEST3-HALCNRS %~ INSA-HAUTS-DE-FRANCE
